A Journalist in the Tech World
Anna Escher : Head of Audience Development at TechCrunch, Founding Team Member of STEM’ED
Growing up I wanted to be a singer and a pop star. I eventually landed on journalism and never looked back. I was an editor at my college newspaper, where my interest in tech journalism started while I was covering the intersection of tech and culture. I learned I was passionate about “the business of information.” Now, I’m on the TechCrunch editorial team, where we cover early-stage startups, tech founders and venture capital. I didn’t have a lot of tech knowledge and knew little about Silicon Valley and startups, but I came to terms with the fact that I didn’t know everything and adopted a growth mindset. I learned how to ask the right questions to the right people at the right time, think critically, and never make the same mistake twice.
I am now the head of audience development for TechCrunch, which means that it’s my job to grow TechCrunch’s readership. My work has spanned across event programming for Disrupt and Startup Battlefield events, news writing, project management, and growth marketing. I’ve sourced startups and done pitch and storytelling coaching for early-stage companies in Latin America, China, Europe, and the U.S.
When asked about her lifehack
Grow confidence and self-acceptance by deconditioning yourself from the ways that society tells you-you are not good enough. Instead of trying to fit in, embrace the ways that you deviate from the norm :)
Anna’s go-to Style tip
I fill my closet with neutral mix and match basic pieces, a few stand out items that have meaning attached to them, and then get creative and colorful with shoes and earrings.
I want to help create a world where news organizations can successfully monetize, and where underrepresented people are empowered by their intelligence!
