Fatima Farheen Mirza’s inaugural novel, “A Place for Us” is the reason she won’t be becoming a doctor anytime soon. And we have no complaints about that. Mirza was on the pre-med track at the University of California Riverside before beginning to write a novel about the Muslim-American experience, influenced greatly by her own experience as a first-generation American from an immigrant family.

The resulting novel is one of the best reads of the year. A touching account.
